Pelicans sweep doubleheader from Hillcats, now one game out of first place
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- Oscar De La Cruz tossed a five-hit shutout, leading the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to a 7-0 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.
De La Cruz (3-2) struck out one to pick up the win.
In the bottom of the first, Myrtle Beach scored on a single by Eloy Jimenez that brought home Bryant Flete. In the following at-bat, Eddy Martinez hit a three-run home run to give the Pelicans a 4-0 lead. The Pelicans then added two runs in the fourth and a run in the sixth. In the fourth, Matt Rose hit a two-run home run, while Robert Garcia hit an RBI double in the sixth.
Matt Esparza (2-3) went four innings, allowing six runs and six hits in the Carolina League game. He also struck out three and walked one.
The Hillcats were held scoreless for the fifth time this season, while the Pelicans' staff recorded their fifth shutout of the year.
In game two of the twinbill, Eloy Jimenez drew a bases-loaded walk with one out in the 13th inning to score the winning run, as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Lynchburg Hillcats 5-4 in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday.
Robert Garcia scored the game-winning run after he led off the inning with a single, stole second and then went to third on a single by Bryant Flete.
The Pelicans tied the game 4-4 when Daniel Spingola hit a three-run double in the seventh.
Reliever Kyle Miller (2-1) picked up the win after he pitched two scoreless innings. Justin Garcia (1-1) went 1 1/3 innings, allowing one run and two hits in the Carolina League game. He also struck out two and walked two.
Spingola doubled twice and singled, driving home three runs in the win.
