Socastee makes quick hire and tabs Scott as new hoops coach

One day after Socastee's Tommy Johnson announced his retirement, the Braves wasted little time in finding his replacement. DeAndre Scott will take over as the Braves boys basketball coach. Scott was interim athletic director at Wilson High School. He stepped down as the Tigers boys hoops coach following the 2011-12 season.

It's a second trip to the Grand Strand for Scott. He coached the Myrtle Beach Seahawks to a state championship in 2008 and left the Grand Strand to return to his alma mater in Florence. In eleven years as a head coach, Scott has won six region championships. "You look at over the last forty years, they've had two head coaches so that speaks to the caliber of guys who both worked there (LA Lakers assistant coach Dan D'Antoni and Johnson), both hall of famers," Scott said. "To come to the lineage and work with kind of basketball program, I'm excited about it."

Scott is anxious to get to the beach and meet with his new team. Socastee is expected to approve its new varsity football coach on monday night. The Braves are seeking a replacement for Tim Renfrow, who moved into the athletic director slot after David Bennett left the Grand Strand for River Bluff High in Lexington.
