The Saint James softball team is one win away from reachin the 3A state championship series, but the Sharks will have to play the waiting game. Thanks to wet fields, the Georgetown/Marlboro County elimination game will resume on Thursday with Georgetown leading 1-0 in the 3rd inning. The winner of that game will face Hartsville on Friday night with that winner taking on Saint James on Saturday.

The Sharks suffered two losses to Georgetown in the regular season as well as a loss to Hartsville, but Saint James avenged that loss with a 6-0 win on Tuesday over the Red Foxes.

The Sharks have just one senior in Cyra Cottrell, who has signed to play college softball at Elon. Here is her press release from the Southern Conference school when she signed:

Cottrell, a 5-foot-3 shortstop and centerfielder, has been an all-state and all-region selection all three seasons at St. James. Cottrell was named the team captain for the upcoming 2011 season, an honor she earned in both 2009 and 2010. She was named her team's MVP in 2010 and earned rookie of the year honors in 2008 as a freshman. She holds six individual offensive records at St. James, including home runs (seven), grand slams (two), slugging percentage (.729), hits (45), total bases (79) and runs scored (40). In the classroom, Cottrell maintains a 4.68 grade point average and was a finalist for the Wendy's High School Heisman award last year.

"Be ready to be inspired by big dreams, work ethic and talent. Cyra is a gifted all-around player who may see the majority of her time in the outfield," Elon coach Patti Raduenz said. "She is just pure feisty on the field and an aggressive hitter with a big arm."
