The Mingo Bay Classic is a three week high school baseball tournament that brings teams from across the country. 54 teams competed this week in nearly a dozen tournament brackets. In the "A" Bracket of the Ashby Ward Division, two local teams emerged in the title game.
Saint James got two homeruns apiece from Gunnar Heidt and Robert Troiano to top Carolina Forest 10-7 in a game that was played in rainy conditions at the Panthers home field. The Sharks got on the board in the first with back to back homers from Heidt and Troiano to get out to a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, Robert Gray got Carolina Forest on the board with an RBI single, but it was Heidt in the 3rd with his second blast to left field that made it a 4-1 Sharks lead. Saint James got a grand slam from Troiano and eventually built a 9-1 lead before Carolina Forest battled back. But it was the Sharks claiming the title and another in-season tournament win.
