Latta wins Class A State Basketball Championship

The Latta girls basketball team won the Class A State Championship on Saturday.

The Latta Lady Vikings basketball team won the Girls Class A State Championship 65-39 over St. Joseph's on Saturday at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia.

TaKeria Legette led Latta with 20 points. Jessica Evans chipped in with 18. Two more players from Latta scored in double-figures. Brittany Burgess scored 13 and Mallory Townsend tallied 11.

Maya Wright scored only three points for Latta. But the Lady Vikings center hauled down 16 rebounds and blocked eight shots.

Latta led by as many as 28 points in the blowout victory. The Lady Vikings defense held St. Joe's to just 21.7 percent shooting for the game.

Head Coach Curtis Jackson's Lady Vikings led 13-9 after the first quarter. But they blew it open in the second period, outscoring their opponent 21-10.

Latta finished the season with a record of 19-4. It is the Lady Vikings first Class A title since 2007 when they were led by former two-time WPDE Miss Hoop Zone finalist Rubylee Wright.

In the Boys Class AAA Championship game, AC Flora beat Darlington 51-42 in overtime.

It is the first state basketball championship for AC Flora (20-6) since 1986. Darlington has never won a basketball state title.

Darlington star Frankie Johnson was held to just 10 points. Marquis Green led Darlington with a dozen points.

James Murray--Boyles scored 16 points, and Karl Gamble had 11 points and 14 rebounds for AC Flora.
