Jewell looking to vault to a state title

The state track and field championships are just three weeks away. Saint James senior pole vaulter Heather Jewell is peaking at the best possible time. Jewell placed 8th in the Taco Bell Classic in a field of 37 vaulters from across North Carolina and South Carolina with a personal best of 10 feet 6 inches. The mark gave the Sharks senior a school record and confidence heading into states. Jewell finished 3rd in class 3A last year with a vault of 10 feet. She hopes to clear 11 feet 6 inches, a full foot higher than her current personal best. Jewell, who is undecided on her college plans, watched girls pole vaulting on the track as an 8th grader at Saint James and decided to give it a try.

Another individual Saint James athlete with high aspirations is Billy Krier, who dominated a field of Horry County runners in the 3200 meters at Doug Shaw Stadium on Wednesday night. Krier finished 3rd in the 1600 meters and 6th in the 3200 meters in last years 3A track championships. Billy is Saint James nominee in the Honda Power of Dreams scholarship and has a stellar 5.07 GPA
