The Hartsville Red Foxes beat the Eastside Eagles 65-62 in overtime, at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, to win the Boys Class 3A State Championship for a second straight year.
Before an estimated crowd of more than 12,000 fans, WPDE Mister Hoop Zone Finalist Jaylen Shaw had a team-high 23 points for Hartsville. Devontae Washington added 14 points with 12 rebounds for the Red Foxes.
In the overtime, Shaw and Washington took charge. Shaw buried a 3-point field goal. Washington blocked a shot. Then off a fastbreak, Shaw threw an alley-oop pass to Washington to close the deal. Hartsville outscored Eastside 8-5 in the extra session.
Hartsville led 31-24 at halftime. But Eastside rallied to outscore the Red Foxes 18-11 in the third quarter to tie it back up heading to the final eight minutes. The score at the end of regulation was 57-57.
Hartsville ended another championship basketball season with a record of 28-1.
Eastside was led by Class 3A player of the year Davaris McGowens with 28 points and 19 rebounds. McGowens has signed to play college basketball at High Point. Eastside finished the season with a record of 25-4.
