The Dillon Wildcats held off a furious comeback from Waccamaw to hold on for a 10-8 win on Monday night at Aynor High School to win the Region 8-2A title. The tie-breaker victory gives Dillon a #1 seed in the Class 2A softball playoffs which begin on Thursday night. It appeared to be an easy day at the office for the 2nd ranked team in the state. The Wildcats got home runs from Dalkerkia Samuel, Makayla Drake and Erin Bailey to build an 8-0 lead. When Tara Grimsley drove home two runs with a base hit to left in the 5th inning, the Warriors were three outs away from a mercy rule 10-0 loss. But Waccamaw rallied with four runs in the bottom of the 5th and answered with four more in the 6th highlighted by a three run homer from Melaina Moore. Waccamaw had the tying run at the plate in the 7th, but Dillon pitcher Darby Hamer was able to work out of a jam and preserve the victory.
Dillon finishes the regular season with a 19-3 record and a 10-1 region mark, while Waccamaw is 22-4 with a 9-2 league record. With the win, Dillon is a #1 seed and Waccamaw gets a second seed. The official SCHSL playoff pairings will be announced on Tuesday.
