Chesterfield outslugs Lake View in Hartsville to win 1A crown

Chesterfield celebrates their first state baseball title in 47 years

For the second straight night, the community of Lake View was proud of its Wild Gators, but it came in defeat. After losing game three in softball on Friday night to Abbeville in Columbia, the Chesterfield Rams topped Lake View 11-6 in the decisive third game of the 1A state championship baseball series at Jimmy White Park in Hartsville. The Rams raced out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st, but the Wild Gators produced three straight singles in the third to load the bases with nobody out. The Wild Gators then got single runs on an error, wild pitch and a bases loaded walk to Hunter Walters to tie the game at 3. Chesterfield did not panic as the Rams got a 2 run blast by Taylor King in the 4th. The Rams never trailed from there adding single runs in the 5th and 6th innings and then pouring on four in the 7th to take an 11-3 lead. Lake View rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as the Chesterfield Rams are 1A state baseball champions. It is the school's first state baseball title in 47 years. Chesterfield's Jimmy Rutherford and Lake View's Kip Herlong praised both sides for a hard played series and sportsmanship throughout the entire week.
