Cheraw wins region title against rival in instant classic

Teddy Gillespie hauled in a 20 yard TD pass from Robert Pitts with :35 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give the Cheraw Braves a come from behind 32-28 win over Chesterfield. The Braves go a perfect 5-0 in Region 4/2A to get the #1 seed in Class 2A Division I and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Rams took a 13-7 lead into the halftime locker room after Bubba Grant's 50 yard interception for a touchdown. The second half became a back and forth affair. Randall Watson's 2 yard TD run in the 3rd quarter tied the game at 13. Chesterfield answered right back as Grant caught a 14 yard TD pass form Dillon Rivers on 4th down to take a 21-13 lead following a two point conversion. Cheraw began its comeback in the fourth quarter starting with a 3 yard TD run by Mark Bowman to get the Braves within 21-19. Following a stop, Khalil Newton busted open a 68 yard TD run to put Cheraw in front 25-21. Chesterfield marched right back as Rivers plunged in from five yards out to put the Rams in front 28-25 with 2:11 remaining in the game. Cheraw was down to its final play when Pitts launched a long pass to Demarcus McManus to keep the drive alive and into Chesterfield territory. It set the stage for Pitts to throw a perfect pass in the corner past two defenders that was gathered by a sliding Gillespie. Cheraw has a bye next week and has now won five consecutive games after starting the season 1-4.
