Florence SC. - The South Florence Bruins concluded last season with an impressive record, but no state title. This season, South Florence has their eyes on the prize and the talent to be state champions.
Quarterback Nick Jones returns for his senior season after tossing over 30 touchdowns a year ago. His main target, Tabari Hines, recently transferred to Marlboro County for family reasons. Despite the loss, the Bruins still have plenty of talent surrounding Jones. Junior wideout David Vereen and senior tailback Rodney Brunson will give South Florence plenty of experience and talent. Add in big offensive lineman Zack Evans up front, and the Bruins have one of the best offensive units in the Pee Dee.
Gavin Grimsley will anchor a defense that did wonders in 2013. His leadership will be vital to the Bruins success defensively. With six players returning on defense, this club has more experience than most, which bodes well.
South Florence stumbled out of the gate with a loss to Fort Dorchester Friday. That said, the season opener won't make or break a season. It's how they respond that dictates how this team will do. The Bruins face New Hanover Saturday August 30th. The game will take place at 8pm as part of the Carolinas Kickoff Clash at Doug Shaw Memorial in Myrtle Beach.
