Sharks turn to girls soccer star for kicking in 2013

Nicole Meyers has been added to the St. James football roster for the upcoming season. The rising senior was at an athletic training internship and was spotted by St. James head coach Mark Fischer. He asked Meyers to kick for him, "Some of the kickers were playing around one day and I went over with them just to see what it was like and I did it one time. I didn't know anyone was watching. Coach Fischer came over and told me I was good at it."

Meyers booted a 40 yard field goal in front of Coach Fischer. That was good enough for him to put her on the team. She is attending the 2-day Myrtle Beach Kicking Academy where she is being coached by New York Jets punter Ryan Quigley, "She can do it, I think she needs a little bit more time. I think she can definitely make an impact on the St. James roster."

Meyers plays for both the St. James basketball and soccer teams. Last spring, she helped the Lady Sharks soccer squad to a region championship.

High School football training camps begin in two weeks. Meyers will be area's second female kicker, joining Dillon's Tara Grimsley.
