Over 150 attend End Zone Media Day 2013

For the past eight years WPDE Sports has hosted an End Zone Media Day. Over the years, the event has shifted from Coastal Carolina to Wild Water and Wheels. Thanks to the generosity of Mark Lazarus and his staff, every single community in our area gets the opportunity to come to the water park and take part in a great day before the start of the 2013 football season.

Here are some news and notes from Media Day:

We got to meet some new coaches who got to experience their first Media Day. Leonard Johnson of Marion, Doug Illing of Socastee, Andrews Scott Durham, Matt Moss of Hannah-Pamplico and Creek Bridge's James Breland were on hand for their first Media Day experience. Breland was a 2000 WPDE All-Zoner at Hemingway and is the first of our alumni to become a varsity head coach. Breland joked with Mark Haggard that his players were in Pampers when he was at the 2000 All-Zone banquet.

The biggest head turner of all the players we saw was Marion offensive lineman Dustin Brothers, a 6 foot 5, 360 pound offensive lineman who will be easy to spot on Friday nights in Swamp Foxes country.

The Aynor Blue Jackets have impressive new uniforms. They were funded by tireless sales of cookie dough by the entire varsity team.

J.R. Boyd is entering his final season with the Lamar Silver Foxes, but wants the focus to be on his 2013 Lamar Silver Foxes. He will be inducted into the South Carolina coaches Hall of Fame along with Johnsonville's Lewis Lineberger.

Waccamaw will use Jalen Simmons as a direct snap quarterback. It will be interesting to see a new look to the Warriors offense.

Gamecocks commit Joe Blue is leaner and meaner. He's down 30 pounds from his 260 pound frame from his junior campaign. The dual threat at running back and linebacker says the team is focused and determined to repeat as 2A state champs. Instead of enjoying the slides and wave pool, the team turned right back around from Media Day obligations to get a workout in at Dillon High.

The Zone Preview schedule begins on August 2nd. We will be posting the full schedule of our 44 teams of previews this Monday. We also have 2012 highlight reels of every player returning to the Zone Nation. We will post those along with schedules, player profile cards and our video previews every day on
