The Conway Tigers bounced back from a loss on Week Zero to beat the New Hanover Wildcats from Wilmington, North Carolina 32-14 on Saturday night at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach at the Carolinas Kickoff Clash.
Conway sophomore Cortez Brown ran for three first half touchdowns to lead the Tigers, who improved to 1-1 on the season.
Brown, taking direct snaps from the Wildcat Formation, rushed for 94 yards. Teammate Ethan Smith completed 10 of 19 passes for 66 yards and one TD. Bryan Edwards, who had six catches for 59 yards, caught a 13 yard scoring pass from Smith to ice the game in the fourth quarter.
Dominique Owens returned an interception 36 yards for a Conway touchdown late in the game.
New Hanover (0-1) had a top 10 ranking entering the season.
The Carolinas Kickoff Clash was a series of four games between North Carolina and South Carolina high schools. On Friday night, Richmond (NC) beat Myrtle Beach 64-30. On Saturday, Hoggard (NC) beat Irmo (SC) 24-22, and Dutch Fork (SC) beat Southeast Raleigh 41-7. Conway's win over New Hanover earned South Carolina a 2-2 split with North Carolina.
Conway will play their third consecutive road game this Friday night, September 6th at Rock Hill.
