The Carvers Bay Bears finished 12-2 and made it all the way to the Class A Division I State Championship game last season, before falling to Christ Church 28-21. With only seven of 22 starters returning this season, the Bears will have to work hard to earn a return trip to Columbia.
Carvers Bay has only three starters returning on offense, including quarterback Israel Davis, who accounted for 12 touchdowns one year ago.
The Bears must replace leading rusher Devin Cuttino, and WPDE All-Zone lineman Naquez Pringle.
Four players are back on defense, including Brandon Young, who registered five sacks last season, and caught three TD passes at wide receiver.
Carvers Bay head coach Nate Thompson says he is confident that the 2014 Bears can contend for a state championship, "They're younger, they're a little bit smaller, but hopefully a little bit more scrappier."
Coach Thompson says he has several talented players off last year's junior varsity squad that he expects to start immediately.
