30-year old Tom Clifford from Wilmington, North Carolina won the 17th annual Myrtle Beach Marathon with a time of 2:30:05. It was the first win for Clifford in four career marathons.
Clifford said he used the Myrtle Beach Marathon as a training run for the upcoming Boston Marathon. His average pace per mile was 5:43 over the 26.2 mile flat course. He finished 6:50 ahead of his closest rival, Jon Hager, from Alpharetta, Georgia.
28-year old Christine Shaw from Manchester, New Hampshire won the women's division with a time of 2:58:38. She accomplished her goal of breaking the three hour mark in her first marathon.
Shaw, a former runner at Boston University, was the 11th overall finisher of the event. Her husband, Phil Shaw, won the Myrtle Beach Half Marathon.
A steady rain for the first half hour of the race and windy conditions slowed down the runners. The course record was set by Stuart Moran in the 2012 Myrtle Beach Marathon in a time of 2:26:26. The women's record is still Kathleen Castles time of 2:40:11 in the 2011 event, when she qualified for the Olympic Trials.
