The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are back on the Grand Strand for a 16th season. The Birds open the 2014 season on Thursday night against the Salem Red Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Joe Mikulik begins his first season as the Myrtle Beach manager. He spent last season as roving outfield coordinator in the Texas Rangers minor league system. Prior to that, he won over 800 games as the Asheville Tourists manager.
The 2014 Pelicans feature three Baseball America top 100 prospects. Catcher Jroge Alfaro is the #54 prospect in minor league baseball. Another name to watch is third baseman Joey Gallo who belted 40 homers last season, tops in all of minor league baseball. Gallo knows the reputation of the Pelicans home as a pitchers park and says he'll adjust his swing to find the gaps and not be concerned with his home run total. The Pelicans top pitching prospect is Alex "Chi-Chi" Gonzalez who had five starts with the Pelicans at the end of last season.
