The Coker Cobras magic didn't carry over to Cary, North Carolina. The Cobras fell 10-2 to Grand Canyon University out of Phoenix, Arizona in an elimination game at the Division II College World Series at the USA National Baseball Complex. Coker's season comes to a close with a 38-16 record.
Coker put together a threat in the top of the first with two base hits, but then went silent in the early innings. Steven Swingle scored on a passed ball to give the Antelopes a 2-0 lead in the second inning. In the 3rd, Michael Pomeroy's RBI double made it a 2-0 game. Coker catcher Frank Suarez dropped a third out right in front of home plate that sparked a two run Grand Canyon 4th inning and a 4-0 advantage. Coker answered back in the bottom of the 4th with a Fico Kondla sacrifice fly and an Ernie Kirkwood RBI triple to cut the lead to 4-2, but the Antelopes pulled away with three runs in the 5th highlighted by a Swingle RBI double off the wall in right center with the bases loaded.
The Cobras were picked to finish 8th in the preseason Conference Carolinas poll, but shocked everyone by winning the conference tournament in Burlington, NC out of the loser's bracket. Coker then went on to its first ever apperance in the NCAA Division II baseball tournament and won the Mt. Olive, NC regional with four straight wins. The Cobras came to Cary on an 8 game win streak and a #3 national ranking before falling to Tampa and Grand Canyon.
