Coastal Carolina Football Holds First Scrimmage of Fall Camp

CONWAY (Courtsey CCU) â?? Coastal Carolina sophomore Devin Brown, a 2013 Freshman All-American and first team All-Big South kick returner, scored touchdowns of 27 and 93 yards on back-to-back plays in the Chanticleersâ?? first scrimmage of the 2014 fall camp.

Overall, the team scrimmaged for an hour Tuesday morning at Brooks Stadium with the first offense facing the first defense and second offense facing the second defense for the majority of the scrimmage.

The first segment of the scrimmage was situational as the offense started on its own three yard line â?? and later its own five â?? with the sole purpose of getting one first down. The offense did move the chains on each of its first four attempts.

The second part of the scrimmage had the offense taking the ball on the defenseâ??s 25 yard line for red zone situations. The first offense converted a third down then, on 3rd-and-3, Alex Ross hit Bruce Mapp in the left corner of the end zone for a seven-yard touchdown. Aaron Aiken led the second unit to a first down, but ultimately had to settle for a 26-yard Ryan Granger field goal. The first defense forced a three-and-out on the next series of downs but Alex Catron split the uprights from 36 yards out. On the final set of downs from the 25 yard line, the second defense made a nice play on a screen play, dropping the offense for a two-yard loss. However, on the next play, Michael Church hit Brown on a bubble screen. Brown waited for a block to develop, made one cut and out-ran the defense for a 27-yard touchdown.

The next play, Brown was deep for a kick return. He fielded the ball on the seven and followed his blockers to the end zone for a 93-yard score.

From that point, the defense took control, forcing five three-and-outs. However, Church led the offense to one score. Starting on the offenseâ??s 30, Deâ??Angelo Henderson moved the chains. Then, Church hit John Israel for a 34-yard pass. After a penalty moved the ball inside the five, Church connected with Thomas Pauciello for a one-yard score.

Big plays made on the defensive side of the ball included: pass break-ups by Samson Baldwin, Rayshaud Shields and Tyrell Brown; sacks by Ed Brown and Andrew Mitchell; tackles for losses by Dwayne Price, Mitchell, Jabarai Bothwell and Tyler Watkins and quarterback hurries by Mitchell and Quinn Backus.

In addition to Brownâ??s kickoff return, Coastal had another highlight on special teams when Israel partially blocked a punt.
