CONWAY (Courtesy CCU Sports) â?? The Coastal Carolina football team had its first official practice of the 2014 preseason Thursday afternoon. Prior to the first session, third-year head coach Joe Moglia announced the addition of transfer wide receiver Alex Wheat, Jr.
A mild rain shower threatened the high spirits for the first half of the session. However, the rain ended and, much like the outlook for the 2014 season, the practice was deemed to be positive.
â??Iâ??ve said it several times, among many factors, you canâ??t control the weather,â?? Moglia said. â??We can control how we handle the weather as well as how we handle our attitude and focus. All in all I thought today was a very good day. There was certainly some carry over from the spring and I could see the hard work from this summer by this group paying off today. That being said, this was just day one and we will need to take full advantage of the next 28 practices before we face The Citadel.â??
Wheat, who previously played at Utah State, joins offensive lineman Morgan Bailey (Georgia Tech) and quarterback Aaron Aiken (Georgetown University) as student-athletes that graduated from their previous institution and have elected to spend their final season of eligibility at Coastal Carolina. Wheat received his degree in sociology this past spring.
Wheat is a 6-4, 215-pound receiver who played in nine games in two seasons at Utah State. The Alpharetta, Ga., native began his collegiate career at Palomar (Calif.) College.
Andre Johnson, who played 24 games at linebacker the past two years, moved to running back this past spring. However, an injury kept him out of action during spring drills. Johnson was a standout running back in high school and showed his big-play ability in the Liberty game this past season, taking a shovel pass and gaining 25 yards on a fake punt. The play was critical in CCUâ??s come-from-behind win and could be considered one of the top plays of 2013 for the Chants.
Joe Kaleta has moved back to offensive line after playing defensive line last season.
A few number changes: C.J. Thompson has moved from 16 to 4. Colton Blackburn has moved from 39 to 10. Michael Church has moved from 1 to 11. A.J. Sattinger has moved from 24 to 15. Kamron Summers has moved from 29 to 20. Andre Johnson has moved from 48 to 22. Alex Scearce has moved from 45 to 25. Rodney Mitchell moved from 68 to 55.
