UNC Asheville tops CCU 88-81 to maintain top spot in Big South

JP Primm scored 23 points and the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs converted 31 of 33 free throws to outlast Coastal Carolina 88-81 on Tuesday night at Kimmel Arena. The Chanticleers were plagued by foul trouble and 16 turnovers. Six CCU players were in double figures, led by Sam McLaurin's 17 points. McLaurin also became CCU's all time leader in blocks. Coastal jumped out to an early 10-7 lead on a Kierre Greenwood steal and basket, but the first place Bulldogs responded with a series of three pointers by Chris Stevenson and JP Primm to get to a double digit lead.

Chris Gradnigo, Coastal's leading scorer, went to bench with 7:32 left in the first half with three fouls. The Chants rallied to get within three with under four minutes to go in the first half, but Primm had a four point play and Matt Dikcey ended the first half with a layup to get the Bulldogs a 47-38 halftime advantage. The Chants were strong in the second half with Kierre Greenwood tying the game at 51, but then the point guard went to the bench with four fouls at the 12:44 mark. Primm hit a three pointer and UNCA never trailed again.

Dickey had 19 points including 12 of 13 from the free throw line and Stephenson added 17. The Bulldogs are now 13-6, 8-0 in the Big South while Coastal drops to 13-5, 6-2 in league play.
