WPDE Sports Director Rich Chrampanis, host of the Cliff Ellis Show, gives some notes from CCU basketball as the team begins practice for the 2012/13 season.
After back to back 28 win seasons, the Chanticleers reached the 19 win mark and a third straight post-season appearance, but the sting on not getting a trip to the NCAA Tournament during the three year run has put a damper on what has been the most prolific three year period in the history of the school. With a brand new facility, comes a brand new roster for the 2012/13 season.
Danny Nieman's arrest and removal from the roster changes the dynamic in the backcourt. Considering this is Niemann's "third strike", there's virtually no chance of him returning to the team for his senior season no matter how the judicial process goes. Coastal's biggest strength when it comes to experience is in its guard play. Kierre Greenwood and Anthony Raffa will now get even more minutes and the roles of sophomore Warren Gillis and senior Charles Ashford will increase as the result of Niemann's deaprture.
Break out the pronunciation guides as the Chants roster has three imports from the African continent as well as a product of the Bahamas and Southeastern Europe. El Hadji Ndieguene (Senegal), Badou Diagne (Senegal) and Michel Enanga (Cameroon) are going to be strongly influenced by Chants assistant coach and former NBA player Mamadou N'Diaye. Tristian Curtis (Bahamas) and Uros Ljeskovic (Montenegro) round out the international flavor on the roster. Ndieguene is a junior college transfer, while the other four new international Chants are true freshmen.
WPDE-All Hoop Zoner in the mix
Tre'von James, a 6'5" swingman, made the 2012 WPDE All-Hoop Zone team out of Darlington High. James will try and make an impact and see if he can earn some minutes in Coastal's rotation.
The Chants non-conference scheduled has been littered with small schools in the past. To Coach Ellis' credit, there are only two such games this year (Johnson and Wales and Toccoa). The Chants schedule is highlighted by a trip to Ole Miss and Clemson coming to the new HTC Center as well as the traditional showdown with the College of Charleston. Coastal also has a home and home with Boston U out of the America East and is once again in ESPN's BracketBusters with an opponent to be announced later in the year.
