Kierre Greenwood hit a short range jumper with five seconds remaining and Coastal Carolina's defense forced an off balanced three pointer at the buzzer that was off the mark to give the Chanticleers a 65-64 win over UNC-Asheville on Wednesday night at the HTC Center in Conway.
Greenwood, who missed a three pointer to force overtime in Asheville earlier this season, got redemption when he hit the floater in the lane. The senior point guard from Cincinnati finished with 9 points. Anthony Raffa led the way with 22 points, including 14 in the first half. The game was locked at 34 at intermission with UNC-Asheville building a five point second half lead. CCU's Badou Diagne gave the Chants a 57-56 advantage and the two teams began trading the lead in the final minutes. DJ Cunningham's dunk gave the Bulldogs a 64-63 edge setting the stage for Greenwood's game winner.
Coastal Carolina is now 13-12, 8-6 in Big South play. The Chanticleers travel to Western Carolina on Saturday at 2pm in an ESPN BracketBusters matchup. The Cliff Ellis Show airs Sunday at 12 noon on WPDE. Sports Director Rich Chrampanis and Coach Ellis will have extended highlights and analysis from both the Western Carolina and UNC-Asheville contests.
