Cliff Ellis saw his Chanticleers pick up a key 70-51 win over Presbyterian on Wednesday night at the HTC Center to get CCU a 10th Big South league win and a chance to win the South Division of the conference. The win had extra special win for the Chanticleers head coach. The victory put him at 664 in the Division I ranks and tied him with John Wooden for 28th on the all time college hoops win list.
"He's my hero. He's one of my heroes. If I had to say one of my top five guys that have been significant and made an impact on me and this game is John Wooden and I'm deeply honored, humbled to be even in the conversation with him," Ellis said following CCU's Wednesday night win. "I'm not John Wooden. He's the greatest. He's the master. He's the king of basketball, but it certainly is an honor to even be mentioned with his name."
Ellis has taken South Alabama, Clemson and Auburn to the NCAA Tournament and is looking to get Coastal Carolina (17-12, 10-5 in the Big South) to the NCAA's for the frist time since the early 1990's. `A win over Charleston Southern on Saturday would give CCU a top seed and a bye in the Big South Tournament which will be contested at the HTC Center in Conway.
