WPDE Sports is your home for the David Bennett Show. The coach said a lack of discipline cost the Chanticleers in a 26-24 loss to Gardner-Webb on Saturday night at Brooks Stadium. After Tre Henderson returned a kickoff 84 yards with under two minutes to go in the game to give the Chants a 24-23 lead, Coastal was plagued by three 15 yard penalties. The first infraction came on the celebration of Henderson's touchdown as three players came off the bench and entered the field to celebrate. With the kickoff on the 15 yard line, Gardner-Webb's return past midfield resulted in two more 15 yard penalties: a face mask and a late hit on freshman Rick Rivers. After watching the return, Bennett did not see where the facemask was, but saw Rivers hit the returner out of bounds. The Bulldogs had the ball on the 14 yard line and ran down the clock to set up the game winning field goal.
Bennett also pointed out LaDarius Hawthorne's blocked punt that was picked up by Gardner-Webb and turned into a first down as something that is rarely seen. Instead of CCU having the ball inside the red zone down 13-10, the Bulldogs rode the momentum of the play to score and take a 20-10 lead. The CCU head man praised wide receiver Matt Hazel for playing through bruised ribs and making a number of key catches. Coastal is now 4-3 on the season and travels to Stony Brook this Saturday for a 4pm kickoff.
