Pitino's son guides FIU past Coastal in college hoops

Richard Pitino picked up his first win as a college head coach against CCU.

Richard Pitino picked up his first win as a head basketball coach on Sunday, as Florida International beat Coastal Carolina 87-77 at the HTC Center, before a crowd of 1,639 in Conway, South Carolina on Saturday.

The 30-year old Pitino is the son of Rick Pitino, the legendary head coach at Louisville, who has 629 career victories, and is the only men's coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the Final Four.

Florida International was led by junior forward Malik Smith with 21 points. CCU's Anthony Raffa tallied a career-high 34 in a losing effort.

The Panthers, from Miami, Florida, went on a 19-5 first half run. They hit 8-of-20 from 3-point range.

Coastal Carolina is now 2-3 on the season. The Chanticleers will be at Boston University on Wednesday, November 28. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. at Case Gymnasium.
