Gardner-Webb closes strong to win at Coastal

Anthony Raffa scored 22 in a losing effort for CCU.

The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs finished on a 9-0 run to beat the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in men's college basketball on Saturday night at The HTC Center in Conway, South Carolina. CCU's home win streak was stopped at eight games.

Trailing by two points with 2:52 left in regulation, Gardner-Webb's Tashan Newsome hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 63-63. Then Tyler Strange hit a lay-up to put the Runnin' Bulldogs ahead to stay. Donta Harper scored 17 points to lead Gardner-Webb.

Coastal Carolina guard Anthony Raffa tallied 22 points to lead all scorers. Kierre Greenwood added 13, and Warren Gillis had 12.

A big difference in the game was at the free throw line. Harper alone had as many trips to the charity stripe as the entire CCU team. Harper hit 13-of-16 attempts. Gardner-Webb made 24-of-30 from the line, while Coastal hit 10-of-16.

The loss drops Coastal's overall record to 12-12, 7-6 in the Big South Conference. The Chanticleers return to action at home against UNC-Asheville on Tuesday, February 19. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
