College Football: Gardner-Webb 26 Coastal Carolina 24

Andrae Jacobs made a big stop in the first half against Gardner-Webb.

Gardner-Webb kicker Trever Austin booted a 31-yard field goal as time expired to give the Bulldogs a 26-24 victory over Coastal Carolina on Saturday night at Brooks Stadium in Conway, before a homecoming crowd of 8,557.

Coastal Carolina appeared on the way to victory after Tre Henderson returned a kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown to give the Chanticleers a 24-23 lead with under two minutes to play. But a series of personal foul calls on Coastal gave Gardner-Webb the football at the CCU 14 yard line. Austin's winning kick went through the uprights as time ran out.

Coastal Carolina took a 10-6 halftime lead on a double-pass trick play. CCU quarterback Aramis Hillary threw the ball to wide receiver Matt Hazel who threw it to Akeem Wesley for a 21-yard touchdown.

Gardner-Webb dominated time of possession, holding the ball for nearly 37 minutes. The Bulldogs also rolled up 405 total yards to just 267 for the Chants.

Coastal Carolina was penalized 11 times for 111 yards in the loss. The Chants fall to 4-3 on the season and 2-2 in the Big South Conference. It was the Bulldogs first win over Coastal since 2003 ending a 7-game losing skid against the Chants.

CCU heads to New York next Saturday, October 29 to play at Stony Brook. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. You can watch all the highlights of tonight's game on The David Bennett Show on Sunday, October 23 at noon on WPDE NewsChannel 15.
