College Baseball Sunday 4/15: USC completes sweep, CCU scores walk-off win, Clemson loses again
Former Conway High pitcher Colby Holmes tossed a season-high 8.1 innings to lead the 9th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks to a 6-4 win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Sunday, before a crowd of 7,011 at Carolina Stadium. The junior right-hander did not walk a batter and struck out three. Ex-St. James star Tanner English went 1-for-3 at the plate and scored a run as the Gamecocks swept three games from Mississippi State. The Gamecocks overall record moves to 27-10, 8-7 in the SEC.
The Clemson Tigers dropped a 6-3 decision to the 17th ranked North Carolina State Wolfpack in front of 4,605 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on the Clemson campus. The Wolfpack was led by Ryan Mathews three RBI performance. N.C. State took two out of three in the series. Clemson's overall record falls to 20-17, 9-9 in the ACC.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers won a thriller over the VMI Keydets 3-2 on Sunday at Watson Stadium in Conway, South Carolina. Rich Witten drove in all three of the Chants runs, including a solo homer in the ninth inning to win the game in walk-off fashion. CCU's overall record is now 24-11, 7-2 in the Big South Conference.
