Coastal wins Big South hoops opener

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers men's basketball team defeated the Longwood Lancers 80-72 in their Big South Conference opener at Farmville, Virginia on Saturday. It was their first road win this season.

Anthony Raffa hit a buzzer beater to end the first half, giving Coastal a 45-38 lead at intermission. Raffa finished with 26 points. Teammate Warren Gillis also had a strong game, with a career-high 21 tallies.

Kierre Greenwood scored 19 for Coastal. He is now just one point shy of 1,000 for his career.

Longwood took a brief second half lead. But Coastal's hot shooting was too much for the Lancers. CCU hit 52.7 percent from the field, and 66.7 percent from 3-point range.

CCU went on a 10-2 second half run to take the lead for good. Gillis hit a 3-pointer and then another two to keep Longwood at bay. The Chants scored seven of the game's final eight points to win by eight.

Coastal Carolina improves to an overall record of 6-6. Longwood falls to 3-12.

CCU returns to action on Wednesday, January 9 at 7 p.m. when they host Presbyterian at the HTC Center in Conway, South Carolina.
