Coastal Soccer to host first round NCAA Tournament game

Coastal Carolina's Ashton Bennett led the Chants to their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team has received an at large berth in the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. Coastal will host a first round contest on Thursday, November 15 against the Elon Phoenix in Conway, South Carolina at 7 p.m.

The winner of the first round game between Coastal Carolina and Elon (15-4-2) will play Wake Forest in the second round on Sunday, November 18.

Coastal beat Elon 4-3 in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. CCU beat Elon 2-1 earlier this season. Head coach Shaun Docking's squad is unbeaten at home in 2012 with a 10-0-1 slate.

The Chanticleers offensive attack is led by senior forward Ashton Bennett and sophomore forward Ricky Garbanzo out of Northwestern High in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Bennett led CCU with 15 goals this season. Garbanzo had 13 goals, on a team that outscored opponents 57-16 over their first 22 games.

CCU sophomore goalkeeper Frederico Bertele, a native of Milano, Italy, has allowed just 14 goals in 20 games. He is credited with more than half of the team's eleven shutouts.

Despite losing to Winthrop 3-2 in the Big South Conference Tournament Championship game on Sunday, CCU enters the NCAA Championship with the winningest record of any team in the field. The Chanticleers have an 18-2-2 record.
