Coastal ready for Big South football showdown

Joe Moglia has won 17 of his first 22 games at Coastal Carolina.

The #3 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers can earn at least a share of the Big South Conference football championship with a win at #16 Charleston Southern on Saturday. The match-up marks the first time in league history that two ranked Big South teams will meet.

Coastal enters the game with a 9-0 record. The Chants are 3-0 in the Big South. The Buccaneers are 8-1 overall, and 2-0 in the Big South. Charleston Southern's only loss came against Colorado in Boulder.

The last time the Buccaneers played a game against CCU with so much on the line, CSU defeated the Chanticleers 34-27 in double-overtime in 2005, to earn a share of the Big South Conference crown with Coastal.

Coastal leads the lifetime series with Charleston Southern 7-3. CCU has won the last three meetings, and three of the last five played at Buccaneer Field.

Coastal Carolina leads the FCS in scoring, averaging 47.7 points a game. Running back Lorenzo Taliaferro is a Walter Payton Award candidate. He has run for 1,251 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Charleston Southern counters with a triple-option running attack, led by Christian Reyes, who has rushed for 1,067 yards.

Kickoff for the Coastal Carolina-Charleston Southern game is set for 1 p.m. at Buccaneer Field.
