The Coastal Carolina football team won their Big South Conference opener 42-7 over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs on Saturday night at Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina.
Lorenzo Taliaferro rushed 24 times for 144 yards and three touchdowns.
Both teams struggled early. Following a fumble on a punt return that was recovered by LaDarius Hawthorne at the Gardner-Webb 5-yard line, Coastal converted the turnover into points when Taliaferro scored on a 4-yard run in the first quarter.
Gardner-Webb turned the ball over four times. Lucas Beatty threw a ball that was intercepted by Quinn Backus and returned 73 yards for CCU's second score of the day.
Coastal rushed for 222 yards and had only one turnover against the Runnin' Bulldogs.
CCU quarterback Alex Ross completed 12 of 21 passes with one touchdown and one interception.
Former Cheraw High great Travis Small had three carries for 12 yards and a TD.
Coastal Carolina is now 6-0 overall, 1-0 in the Big South Conference. The Chanticleers will be on the road at Liberty next Saturday, October 19. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
