The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers football team will open the season on Saturday, August 31 against the South Carolina State Bulldogs at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium in Orangeburg at 6 p.m. CCU finished the 2012 season with an 8-5 record and made it to the second round of the FCS Playoffs for the first time in school history.
Chanticleers Head Coach Joe Moglia said, "Last year was last year, and we are beginning a brand new season, and our job is to maximize our potential as far as this year goes."
Coastal enters the 2013 season ranked in the Top 25 Polls. The Chants are 25th in The Sports Network rankings, and 21st in the FCS Coaches Poll.
CCU won both previous meetings against South Carolina State, including a 33-14 victory the last time they played in 2006, at Brooks Stadium in Conway.
S.C. State, out of the MEAC, finished with a 5-6 record last season. The Bulldogs are led by Richard Cue at quarterback and leading receiver Caleb Davis, a 2008 WPDE All-Zone selection. Both players hail from Wilson High in Florence.
Coastal is 5-5 in season openers. They have an impressive 14-1 lifetime record against MEAC opponents.
Coastal Carolina will play their home opener on Saturday, September 7 at Brooks Stadium in Conway against the Furman Paladins at 6 p.m.
