Coastal Football Moves Up in Both Polls; Backus Honored Nationally & by Big South

Chants prepare to face North Carolina A&T Saturday at 6:00.

CONWAY (COURTESY CCU) â?? With a season-opening win at The Citadel, the Coastal Carolina football program moved up two spots in both of the national polls, climbing to fourth in the FCS Coaches poll and fifth in The Sports Network media poll. In addition, Buck Buchanan Award candidate Quinn Backus was selected the Big South Defensive Player of the Week by the leagueâ??s office as well as by, while being named one of four National All-Stars by the College Sporting News.

The #5 ranking in The Sports Network ties a program-best position by that poll, matching the mark last season after Coastal started the season 9-0. The Chanticleers have been ranked as high as #3 in the FCS Coaches poll, a mark they attained for three weeks last season.

Coastal Carolina (1-0) will take its lofty ranking to Greensboro, N.C., to face North Carolina A&T (1-0) this Saturday (Sept. 6) at 6 pm. The Aggies, which are receiving votes in both national polls, defeated Alabama A&M, 47-13, a game played Sunday in Orlando on ESPN. The Chanticleers are 4-0 all-time versus North Carolina A&T, including a 2-0 mark at Aggie Stadium.

Backus, a two-time All-American, earned his three honors after recording 14 tackles (nine solo) and forcing two fumbles at The Citadel. The senior tallied 11 of those stops through three quarters as Coastal was leading 21-3 and led a defense that had surrendered just 231 yards of total offense to that point. His 14 stops not only led the team, but were the fifth-best, single-game total of his career and his 15th career double-digit tackle effort. In 29 career starts, Backus led the team in tackles 19 times.

Backus has now been named Big South Defensive Player of the Week nine times in his career â?? not including him earning Big South Freshman of the Week honors once â?? and has earned a national weekly honor five times.

Backus is:

· the active NCAA FCS career tackles leader, now with 328.
