The 21st ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers rallied from a ten point deficit to beat the 25th ranked Eastern Kentucky Colonels 51-32 at Roy Kidd Stadium in Richmond, Kentucky on Saturday. Coastal Carolina is off to a 3-0 start for the first time in history.
Coastal Carolina jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a pair of touchdown runs by Lorenzo Taliaferro.
Eastern Kentucky went on a 24-point run to take a ten point lead, 24-14 over CCU in the second quarter.
Coastal scored three more times to close out the first half. Former Cheraw High standout Travis Small scored on a 9 yard run to pull the Chanticleers within three points of the lead. Alex Catron followed with a 22-yard field goal. Taliaferro then scored his second TD of the night on an 11 yard run to give CCU a 31-24 lead at halftime.
The Chants continued to pour it on in the second half. Alex Ross threw a 10-yard TD pass to DeMario Bennett in the third quarter. Ross followed with a 39-yard TD strike to former Wilson High star John Israel to make it 44-24 Coastal.
In the fourth quarter, Coastal struck one more time. Ross hit Bruce Mapp on a 2-yard TD pass. Coastal scored 37 unanswered points after trailing by ten in the first half.
Ross completed 19 of 28 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns.
Lorenzo Taliaferro led all rushers with 17 carries for 174 yards and three scores. The Coastal offense rolled up 631 yards of total offense, second most in program history, against Eastern Kentucky (1-2).
It was Coastal's first regular season road win over a ranked opponent since 2005.
Coastal Carolina (3-0) will host Hampton next Saturday, September 21 at Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
