The 22nd ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers beat the Furman Paladins 35-28 at Brooks Stadium in Conway on Saturday night.
Coastal Carolina quarterback Alex Ross engineered two early touchdown drives and the Chants never trailed. Ross threw for 245 yards and accounted for two touchdowns. He ran for one and thew another to Thomas Pauciello.
CCU wide receiver Matt Hazel led the Chants receivers with six catches for 77 yards. He also scored on a 24 yard run.
Linebacker Quinn Backus led the Coastal defense with 15 tackles and an interception. He also had a pass break-up on Furman's final drive that ended the Paladins hopes.
The paid attendance at Brooks Stadium was 8,636, but the stands were little more than half full to watch the Coastal Carolina-Furman game.
The Chants (2-0) will be on the road next Saturday, September 14 at Eastern Kentucky (1-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
