Coastal Carolina Men's Basketball picked to finish 3rd in Big South

Coastal Carolina head basketball coach Cliff Ellis is in his seventh season with the Chanticleers.

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers men's basketball team has been selected to finish 3rd in the South Division of the Big South Conference, in voting by head coaches and the media at the 30th Big South Conference Media Day in Myrtle Beach.

High Point's John Brown was picked as preseason Big South player of the year. CCU did not have any players selected on the All-Big South preseason team.

The Chanticleers are coming off a 14-15 regular season. They have three returning starters, Warren Gillis, El Hadji Ndieguene, and Badou Dainge. The two departed starters are leading scorer Anthony Raffa and point guard Kierre Greenwood.

Seven players on the CCU roster are newcomers, including former WPDE Mister Hoop Zone Eric Smith out of Mullins High, a transfter from the South Carolina Gamecocks. Head Coach Cliff Ellis says Smith must play well on offense and defense in order for Coastal to have a successful season.

Charleston Southern was picked to win the South Division of the Big South. High Point was selected to win the North Division.

Coastal opens their regular season schedule on the road against the Zips in Akron, Ohio on Friday, November 8. The Chants home opener will be on November 11 against Guilford College at 7 p.m. at the HTC Center in Conway, South Carolina.

The Coastal Carolina women, under new head coach Jaida Williams, were picked to finish 9th overall in the Big South. The CCU women will play an exhibition against Claflin on Sunday, October 27 at the HTC Center at 2 p.m. in Conway. The ladies will tip-off the regular season on Saturday, November 9 against Virginia Intermont at 2 p.m. in Conway.
