Coastal Carolina Football earns share of Big South Championship

Coastal Carolina has won at least a share of the 2013 Big South Conference football championship.

The Coastal Carolina football team has earned a share of the Big South Conference Championship, following a 46-13 win over Presbyterian, combined with Gardner-Webb's 27-10 win over Charleston Southern.

Coastal (10-1) has finished their Big South schedule with a record of 4-1. Charleston Southern and Liberty are both 3-1 and will meet next Saturday on the final day of the regular season to determine who will share the conference title with CCU. Whether Coastal wins a conference tie-breaker or not, the Chanticleers are a lock to earn a playoff berth as either Big South Champ or as an at-large.

Coastal rolled up 410 rushing yards, led by Lorenzo Taliaferro who had 16 carries for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns. Matt Hazel led CCU in receiving with seven catches for 119 yards. Hazel, with 162 catches in his career, broke Jerome Simpson's school record for the most receptions in CCU history.

Quarterback Alex Ross threw for 232 yards and one score, and ran for another in the blowout win over the Blue Hose.

Former Cheraw High star Travis Small played his final regular season home game at Brooks Stadium with 14 carries for 61 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Quinn Backus led the way with seven tackles and half a sack.

Coastal shattered the Big South Conference single-season scoring record today. They now have 501 points.

CCU has now shared or won six Big South Conference titles in the program's 11-year history.

Coastal Carolina will travel to Columbia next Saturday, November 23 to play the South Carolina Gamecocks at 1 p.m. at Williams-Brice Stadium. The FCS Playoffs begin the following weekend. The FCS Playoff pairings will be announced on Sunday, November 24.
