CCU Football holds first full scrimmage this spring

Aramis Hillary scored on a 2 yard TD run during the scrimmage.

Coastal Carolina held its first full scrimmage of the spring on Saturday morning at Brooks Stadium. WPDE Sports Director Rich Chrampanis, host of the David Bennett Show, shares his observations: MISSING WEAPONS The first team offense was definitely shorthanded as tight end David Duran was out with an ankle sprain. In addition, wideouts Matt Hazel and DeMario Bennett were not at the scrimmage as they took to tutors to work on schoolwork. CHILDERS DOUBLE DUTY Jamie Childers is spending the majority of spring working with the second team at quarterback. David Bennett said that Childers is still in the mix at QB despite playing almost exclusively at tight end last season. BIG SCRIMMAGE FOR POOKIE CCU wideout Akeem Wesley, aka Pookie in CCU football circles, had a solid start to the scrimmage. Wesley had three catches in the first two drives including a great catch in traffic that set up Aramis Hillary's TD run. FIRST TEAM DJohnnie Houston was working the first team at safety alongside Marcus Lott. Houston and Phillip George are going to be critical to step in for the departed seniors Keon Cunningham and Dominique Davenport. The first unit has looked strong in the two scrimmages I have seen headlined by Big South defensive player of the year Andrae Jacobs.
