Mark Haggard's Orange Bowl Preview:
The Clemson Tigers will play the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Orange Bowl at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida on Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. This is the Tigers first appearance in the Orange Bowl since 1981.
Clemson is a 3-Dabo Swinney Press Conference Transcriptpoint favorite by oddsmakers. The Tigers finished the regular season with a 10-3 record and won the ACC Championship by defeating Virginia Tech.
West Virginia ended the regular season with a three game win streak. But the Mountaineers barely clinched the Big East bid winning five of seven conference games, getting help from Cincinnati to secure the BCS berth.
The Mountaineers are led by quarterback Geno Smith who guided his squad to an average of 35 points per game this season. West Virginia averaged more than 340 passing yards per game.
Clemson averaged more than 33 points per game this season. While counterpart Smith has thrown for more yards, Tigers QB Tajh Boyd has been slightly more efficient against a much tougher schedule. Boyd has thrown 31 TD passes with only ten interceptions. Smith has 25 TD tosses with seven picks.
Boyd acutally committed to West Virginia in 2008 but changed his mind because he was not convinced the Mountaineers offense was a good fit for him. It will be interesting to see if there are any hard feelings. But this is a new staff under Dana Holgorsen.
On defense, Clemson has shown a lack of ability to stop the run, giving up 176 per contest. West Virginia's defense has given up a generous 26 points per game.
This will be Clemson's fourth appearance in the Orange Bowl. The Tigers won the school's only national football championship when they beat Nebraska 22-15 in 1981. This is Clemson's first BCS bowl appearance, a third trip to a BCS for West Virginia.
This is only the second meeting between Clemson and West Virginia. The Tigers beat the Mountaineers 27-7 in Jacksonville back in 1989.
Clemson is 16-17 in bowl games. They have lost four of their last five.
