Darlington County Deputies have arrested a Hartsville man in connection with a Monday morning deadly shooting.
Police responded to reports of a shooting in the area of Humming Byrd and Byrdtown Road in Hartsville Monday morning.
When units arrived they found a 29 year-old Hartsville woman shot to death. Darlington County coroner Todd Hardee identifies the woman as Olukemi Lutayo Wheeler.
Investigators say that Willie Ervin Smith Jr., 32, of Hartsville, shot Wheeler once in the chest and then tried to hide the body before he called police.
Investigators say Smith called 911 around just after 1:15 am Monday and told dispatchers that he had shot the victim.
Police found the woman's body in the back of Smith's van in a field at the corner of Humming Byrd and Byrdtown Road.
Smith remains in the Darlington County Detention Center on a murder charge.
