Carnival Cruise reports profits; helps Charleston businesses

Carnival Cruise Lines is reporting big profits. The cruise line, which is a major player in Charleston's tourism economy, says it made a nearly $250 million fourth quarter profit.

That's up over $50 million from the year before.

Businesses in downtown Charleston say when cruise ships tie up, they can boost business by 15 to 20 percent.

"There are people here that weren't here before, and now with cruise ships, we have extra business," says John Seal with Market Street Winery.

Carnival is forecasting another big year in 2011. The cruise business is estimated to have a $37 million impact on Charleston's economy.
