Boy safe after close call with bull shark

A 10-year-old boy is safe after a scary day at Folly Beach. He had a close call with an eight-foot-long bull shark.

The incident happened during a popular surfing contest on Sunday afternoon on Folly Beach.

It was the final heat for Tyson Royston during the biggest ever 2013 South Carolina Governor's Cup of Surfing.

"A shark got tangled in my leash and pulled me back and pulled me under, and I reached down and grabbed my leash and swam in," said Royston.

The Charleston Post Courier reports Royston is from Myrtle Beach.

His coach was just steps away when he realized Royston wasn't trying to impress the judges, he was just trying to get away from the shark.

The directors of the cup immediately cancelled the event.

Directors, surfers and onlookers say they are thankful the close call didn't turn into a deadly attack.
