Trump, Pence respond to fatal SC train collision
The White House briefed President Trump on the accident that killed two Amtrak workers, according to a statement from Deputy White House Press Secretary Lindsay White.
The statement said:
The President has been briefed on the train accident in South Carolina and is receiving regular updates. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that has been affected by this incident.
President Trump also tweeted about the incident.
Vice President Pence tweeted about the collision on Sunday afternoon.
The train collision occurred around 2:45 a.m. near Charleston Highway and Pine Ridge Drive involving an Amtrack passenger train and a CSX freight train. In addition to the two fatalities, EMS transported more than 100 people to hospitals. Palmetto Health Richland says its hospitals took in 62 individuals.
Gov. Henry McMaster held a press conference around 10:30 a.m. to discuss the accident. Officials also provided updates on the injured and the investigation.
