Woman killed trying to break up fight

Patricia Singleton

Sumter police say Patricia Singleton, 54, died from a gunshot wound Wednesday.

Police were called to a report of a female lying in the front yard of a home in the 400 block of Council Street about 6 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found Singleton with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.

She was taken to Tuomey Regional Hospital, where she died.

While the motive for the shooting is still under investigation, detectives believe that Singleton tried to break up a fight in front of her home when Derek Darby, 18, shot her.

Police found Darby at a hotel about 12:15 a.m.

Darby has been charged with Murder and is being held at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center pending a bond hearing.

The investigation is on-going.
