Woman arrested, accused of leaving young kids home alone

An Horry County woman has been arrested, after police said she left her two small children home alone.

Deanna Hilburn, 29, of Galivants Ferry was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center Saturday.

She is charged with Unlawful Neglect of a Child, and is being held without bond on that charge.

Hilburn is also charged with Assault and Battery Third Degree, and bail is set at $1,000 on that charge.

This charge stems from a separate incident, according to Horry County police spokesperson Lt. Robert Kegler.

Horry County police were called to a home on Dog Bluff Road in the Galivants Ferry area of Horry County on July 11.

When they arrived, officers found a 5-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy left home alone, according to the police report.

The children weren't able to tell the officer how long they had been left home alone, and were left with "no way to contact someone in case of an emergency," according to the report.

The victims' grandmother called police.

Relatives who live nearby took the children that night, and said the kids "had been with them for the majority of the day," according to the report.

One of the responding officers said they were on scene for more than an hour and no one knew where Hilburn was or how to get a hold of her.

The Department of Social Services was called to investigate.

Police say that warrants were obtained before the arrest was made.
