Woman accused of putting something in co-workers drink that made her sick

Leah Downey

Leah Downey, 21, is charged with Unlawful Malicious Tampering with Human Drug Product or Food after Florence County deputies say she poured some kind of liquid in her co-workers drink that made her sick at Sammy's Country Kitchen, where they worked, in the Effingham Community.

Deputies with the Florence County Sheriff's office arrested Downey following an investigation that started July 23rd.

The 30-year-old victim says when she took a sip of her drink it tasted funny. She took another sip and immediately got sick.

The victim says she began to vomit and her kidneys hurt for two days.

Deputies say surveillance camera footage shows Downey putting something in Timmons' drink.

The manager and owner of the restaurant says they had to thoroughly clean the facility and threw out everything Downey may have come in contact with.

They say DHEC has given them a rating of 100% following the incident.

During a bond hearing, Magistrate Belinda Timmons set bond for Downey at $10,000.

She is not allowed to have contact with the victim or go to Sammy's Country Kitchen.

She remains in jail at the Florence County Detention Center.
