Anthony Battle, a 17-year-old Wilson High School student, was charged Friday after police say he claimed to have an explosive device in his briefcase at school.
Battle is charged with one count of Conveying False Information About a Bomb and one count of Intimidation or Threat with Hoax Device.
Once school officials learned of the threat Thursday, Florence County Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Mike Nunn says they separated the student from the briefcase and evacuated the immediate area.
Students were sent to the gymnasium while the Florence County Sheriff's Office and the State Law Enforcement Division ordinance experts worked to determine whether the threat was real or not.
After manipulating the briefcase remotely, Nunn said, experts determined that the briefcase contained no explosives.
School officials have not said how the student will be disciplined.
Battle is expected in court for a bond hearing at 3 p.m. Friday.
