Waccamaw EOC shuts down, 42 employees fired

The Waccamaw Economic Opportunity Council shut its doors late Wednesday afternoon, hung signs that read "closed until further notice," and fired 42 employees.

The closure comes after months of financial troubles, a scathing state audit and threats from the state to pull its funding.

The agency, which helps the poor throughout Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg counties, runs the Head Start program, which has already closed for the summer and helps people pay utility bills.
